Day Surgery & Inpatient Surgery

Depending on the type of surgery you need, you may go home after surgery or stay in the hospital for monitoring and follow-up care. Day surgery, also called outpatient, means you’ll go home after your procedure. It’s considered inpatient surgery if you have to stay overnight after your procedure.

Minimally Invasive Techniques

Benefit from less invasive options for your surgery. Whenever possible, your team will do your procedure laparoscopically. This means your surgeon will use tiny tools, small incisions, and a camera to treat your condition. Minimally invasive techniques provide a faster recovery with less risk of infection and other complications.

What to Expect

Get compassionate, personalized care at UNC Health Rockingham from specialists you know by name in a community setting. You’ll appreciate the convenience of a location near your home and our commitment to scheduling your surgery as soon as possible.

Before Surgery

You’ll take part in a pre-operative (pre-op) interview before the day of your surgery with your UNC Health Rockingham surgical care team. You can ask questions and get instructions on how to prepare for your procedure and what to expect.

During Surgery

Your procedure takes place in our operating room (OR) where you’ll benefit from advanced technology in the hands of experts. Trust your surgery team to follow the latest and most effective safety precautions.

Pain Control & Your Comfort

Your comfort and safety are our focus before, during, and after your procedure. Tell your team if you feel anxious or have pain at any time.

You may receive anesthesia, pain block injections, or sedative medications to prevent you from feeling pain during and after the procedure. Your providers may recommend other medications and treatments to control pain as you recover. For example, you may benefit from Polar Care® therapy, an ice pack that lessens pain thanks to the continuous flow of cool water.

Waiting Room Amenities

Your loved ones can take advantage of amenities designed with their needs in mind. During surgery, family members and friends can relax in a waiting room that offers:

  • Free Wi-Fi
  • Magazines
  • Patient board that shows surgery progress updates

If a family member wants to stay overnight, ask your care team for a chair that reclines so they can sleep in your room.

Certified Care Team

Partner with a surgeon with advanced training and experience in your procedure. Your surgical care team may also include:

  • Anesthesiologists
  • Certified surgical technologists
  • Operating room (OR) staff
  • Registered nurses (RNs), including nurses with certifications in surgical care, administering anesthesia, and documenting patient safety
